Maori elder Kingi Taurua sends TPPA partners, Queen a formal notice of veto of trade agreement

February 3, 2016

Kingi Taurua, a prominent Nga Puhi elder at Waitangi’s Te Tii Marae, has sent a formal notice of veto of the Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement to the embassies and trade departments of its proposed partner countries, and has requested that the Queen intervene on the issue.

The document cites the Treaty of Waitangi and the 1835 Declaration of Independence of New Zealand, and states that the New Zealand government does not have “due authority” to sign the TPPA without the agreement of Maori elders, “which [agreement] has not been given”.

Mr Taurua claims that the TPPA would be void in respect of New Zealand’s involvement as a result, should it be signed.

NZ Food Security has obtained a copy of the document sent by Mr Taurua, which is titled “Notice of Non-Assent to the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement and Exercise of Constitutional Power of Veto in Respect Thereof”.

The public release of the document comes just a day before the TPPA is due to be signed in Auckland, New Zealand on February 4 by visiting politicians from countries around the Pacific.

Mr Taurua is currently meeting with other Maori elders at Te Tii Marae in preparation for a visit by John Key, prime minister of New Zealand, and other government officials on Waitangi Day, February 6 – after the scheduled signing.

He has previously stated that Mr Key would not be allowed onto the marae if the controversial trade agreement was signed, although a trustee for the marae stated on February 2 that Mr Key would be allowed onto the land.

It is thought that the notice sent to the partner countries of the TPPA is being discussed at the marae in anticipation of the visit, as the document asks the Queen to stand in opposition to the agreement with Mr Taurua “and those other Rangatira o Te Whakaminenga o Ngā Hapū o Nu Tireni” – referring to the other chiefs gathered at the marae – that “agree to … my position”.

The document says that he “requests and requires” the Queen to intervene and act as “Protector” of New Zealand’s sovereignty from “attempts on the sovereignty of our Independent State” by “overseas corporate interests”. At least one other elder has already countersigned the document.

The language of the document echoes that of the Declaration of Independence, which was signed by Mr Taurua’s ancestor, Pareha of Ngati Rehia. He says that another ancestor of his, Te Kemara, was a signatory of the Maori version of the Treaty of Waitangi 1840.

Last year the Waitangi Tribunal found that Maori did not cede sovereignty when they signed the Treaty of Waitangi, and it is apparently this sovereignty by descent – or tino rangatiratanga – that Mr Taurua is claiming he is able to use to formally veto the trade agreement.

The document closes by stating that Mr Taurua “does not give [his] permission to the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement being signed in Auckland” by the visiting officials from overseas “which position I take to the full extent of my right to regulate trade in that district.”

The Declaration of Independence, which was approved by the Queen’s predecessor King William IV and ratified by the British government, states that Maori elders would gather at Waitangi each autumn in order to regulate trade.

Not related to my writing but something far more important. The sovereignty of my homeland and the future protection of my children. I wanted to confirm on my blog we Kiwi’s DO NOT WANT the TPPA, we gave our Government and John Key NO MANDATE to sign it on our behalf and as this post explains, it is actually ILLEGAL for them to do so without the agreement of our Maori Elders. Be interesting to see what unfolds on Thursday 4th May 2016 in Auckland at Sky Tower.

I agree with you Butch can’t understand why the Queen hasn’t stepped in either.Think its about time another Politician (any Politician with the guts and balls) stands up to John Key and gets rid of him.He clearly isn’t doing whats best for New Zealand therefore he should be gone. They seem to forget who they are working for and who pays them.Other Politicians seem to be letting him do whatever he wants.Surely they can’t all agree that the decisions he and his minions are making are whats best for NZ.Get rid of him ASAP

unfortunately recently the Queen joined the EU (European Union) which breaks the legal obligation and relationship between The Crown and the Maori Declaration of Independence.

He is the new king of new Zealand and no matter how many times he laughs ,disrespect the whole nation ,sells of everything then after he destroyed our land, our tangata, our new Zealand he will go back where he came from USA. Our country is in ruin and we are nothing to the Pm. This is an excellent move and Kingi Taurua speaks for the vast majority of NZ whose views are being totally ignored by Key and his cronies. Key is selling our sovereignty.

For once I agree with Kingi Taurua and all Maori and Pakeha residents who are against signing the TPPA. As a white Pakeha having come to NZ over 65 years ago, and very proud of my British and Kiwi background, I stand with all Kiwis of whatever background to remain an independent constitutional monarchy and like wise call upon my very distant relative, Queen Elisabeth 2nd to step in and protect NZ from being sold out to International lawmakers. While I stand on the conservative side of politics, and do not agree with the way the ‘original’ treaty was cunningly replaced with the existing one, by the left side of politics to the detriment of all New Zealanders, in this case I say to the current political leaders, do not continue with this action. For too long NZ has been used as a guinea pig to create one world government. Stand up NZ and do not let this take place.

  11. The queen isn’t renowned for supporting indigenous people witness the number of times envoys of Maori folk made their way to have an audience with the sovereign at the time only to be refused or flicked off. Read just yesterday how TW Ratana was treated in this way … he wore old clothes on his return to reflect the way he was treated by the Crown. I recall also how she exercised her Royal Prerogative to prevent the Chagossians from returning to their home that the UK & US jointly flogged off them for the Diego Garcia military base used as a convenient launch pad for attacking Iraq which BTW had no WMD. Elizabeth owns one sixth of the planet including our corporation NZ.

  12. I wish the aboriginals in Australia could put a stop to this. We dont want it either. I hope it doesn’t get signed.

If anyone thinks the Queen will stop the signing are in dreamland, she won’t now or ever as she is only a puppet to the ruling government

The Governor General is the representative of the Queen for NZ. Let’s hope he can add some weight to this TPPA fiasco. Let’s wait and see, whether he has what it takes to make all the correct decisions on what local iwi are demanding. These super power’s like the EU and USA are trying to intimidate NZ and like Nauru and part’s of Africa if, they get their way, they WILL strip us bare and leave our land’s with it’s wealth and us with nothing

    • Hi there. It seems in fact that the GG might just be the secretary of, effectively, a holding company called Her Majesty the Queen in Right of New Zealand (aka “the Crown”). It’s registered with the US Securities and Exchange Commission. JK could be considered the Managing Director (who is intentionally bankrupting it using his banking skills).

This corporation, or whatever you want to call it, is not the Queen. But it might well hold the assets that she is deemed to have in NZ, and it would almost certainly be set up one way or other for her benefit or the benefit of those she directs.

It’s important to note that this corporation is not a party to the Treaty. Nor are the incorporated societies, masquerading as Maori, that this corporation has “settled” with on Treaty issues. One could argue that the Maori for the districts concerned have extinguished their sovereignty by coming under statutory bodies set up under this “mother corp”. But did they do this with full disclosure? And did they whakapapa to the signatories of te tiriti – thus, did they have authority to sign?

Agreed that the US, or rather multinational corps registered within it (also probably owned by the Queen, et al) would love to rort this country rotten. The TPPA gives them the full powers to do this through the ISDS clauses and their fiat currency usury practices. These include police enforcement clauses.

The TPPA is much, much heavier than most people realise. We are looking at the complete redistribution of wealth from the people (including Maori Land) to supranational corporate shareholders. Nobody will be unaffected. Which is why it must be stopped. And it can be, using treaty law.

This is unfortunately too common in so any countries today, all of which have basically lost their sovereignty. Every time that we put up a place for Heritage listing, done in all good faith, we hand over ‘ownership’ to United Nations. So all our pristine areas, lakes, tramping tracks etc are no longer in our control. Australia think they own the Great Barrier reef, and some of the pristine forests in Tasmania, but basically they have no rights to those either. So no it’s not in the Queens control either. In Australia each of the states are in fact companies, so one wonders if voting at the elections can do anything because ‘the company’ will do what it wants. When you buy a property, my understanding is that government, (the corporation) actually is the owner and could take it back!!!!!
It’s the world government cronies who are calling the tune. They own the Banking system, they own virtually most of the countries, they, as is happening in the US are bringing in UN forces that can and will override our own police and military. So fight for the people. Do not let the Maori-Pakeha division weaken your defences for that is what world leaders want. If they can create division in a country they will exploit that for their own ends. Get back together to what NZ was known for years ago, a country of peace and harmony between the races, where everybody was a Kiwi. Forget about who were the original land owners, we were al immigrants. If things carry on the way they are going not one of us will own any land. United Nations will take control. Unify save NZ.
